This was my first radio, and I'm surprised that it hasn’t come up here before. It is a tri-band HT covering 6 Meters, 2 Meters, and 70 Centimeters. It has extended receive, which can even pickup AM broadcast stations. It is extremely rugged; mine has survived a 10-foot drop from a tree onto hard packed dirt, and once it was wiped off, it worked just fine. It is water resistant, while not quite as much as the new VX-7. Its size makes it extremely portable for when I go backpacking with my boy scout troop.
Now for the cons...Sometimes the display will go dead, but to fix that, all I have to do is slap the radio. I guess it's a loose connection somewhere in there, but I don't trust myself to take apart the radio to find it. The antenna that comes with it doesn't work that well on 6M, which didn't bother me much, but if someone wants to do lots of 6 Meter work, they may have to buy another antenna.
Another example of how rugged this radio is (taken from eham.net)...

He went at it for almost an hour, and all that happened was there is one scratch on the display, the antenna was destroyed and the number 5 key has a big chip out of it. I expected the rig to be destroyed, but it worked fine when I powered it on (after cleaning off all of the dog drool). |
